Class Description

In this class we examine the role the Fear Paralysis and the reflexes that are connected to the second stage of Moro relate to establishing a sense of stability and security, and how they are important for bonding and attachment, communication and language development.

Teaching methods include – The course involves a mixture of theory and practical and experiential applications, presented through a combination of Powerpoints, videos, demonstrations; discussions and practice sessions.

Topics Include:

  • Recognize the importance of the FPR and Moro reflexes in establishing a sense of security and stability.
  • Indicate how the clinging and grasping reflexes relate to the Moro reflex and how if they are retained they can delay emotional maturity.
  • Explain the role of reflexes in developing language
  • Recognize how retained reflexes can effect emotional and behavioural development
  • Identify emotions with specific retained reflexes
  • Demonstrate passive isometrics to promote postural, proprioceptive and vestibular integration
  • Summarize the role of reflexes in establishing bonding and attachment
  • Review the role and functions of the flight-or-fight response
  • Demonstrate how to use facial massage techniques to integrate reflexes influential in developing language and emotional maturity
  • The role infant movement and reflexes play in language development, emotional stability, impulse control, curiosity, developing relationships and independence.

Includes illustrated manual:

The RMTi courses are recommended for OTs, PTs, educators, psychologists, counselors, health care professionals, parents, kinesiologists, adult students, and caregivers.

Class Objectives

Upon course completion students will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of the FPR and Moro reflexes in establishing a sense of security and stability.
  • Indicate how the clinging and grasping reflexes relate to the Moro reflex and how if they are retained they can delay emotional maturity.
  • Explain the role of reflexes in developing language
  • Recognize how retained reflexes can effect emotional and behavioral development
  • Identify emotions with specific retained reflexes
  • Demonstrate passive isometrics to promote postural, proprioceptive and vestibular integration
  • Summarize the role of reflexes in establishing bonding and attachment
  • Review the role and functions of the flight-or-fight response
  • Demonstrate how to recognize which rhythmic movements to use with specific retained reflexes
  • Demonstrate how to use facial massage techniques to integrate reflexes influential in developing language and emotional maturity
  • Demonstrate the movement patterns and protocols for integrating the FPR, Moro, Grasp, Plantar, Rooting, Suck, Spinal Perez and Babkin Reflexes
  • Identify protocols to stabilize emotional overwhelm connected to postural instability

Topics

  • The role infant movement and reflexes play in language development, emotional stability, impulse control, curiosity, developing relationships and independence.
  • Regulating the flight-or-fight reflex
  • The critical importance of integrating the Fear Paralysis and Moro and related reflexes for sensory processing, emotional regulation and social development.

Assessments

Students taking the RMTi courses for professional credit or continuing education must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Attend the entire duration of the training
  2. Complete a written test of at least 75% correct answers demonstrating an understanding of the important concepts taught in the class.
  3. Actively participate in experiential learning and practicing of the movements.
  4. Show competency in lab work while working in pairs with student partners during the class.
  5. Submit a completed training evaluation form.

Students are also expected to read the course manual and to actively participate in class discussions and activities.

Class Outline

Learning Outcomes – This course expands our understanding of the role reflexes play in developing a sense of safety so we can learn to live with a sense of belonging, stability and confidence. The establishment of a healthy ability to bond and attach is essential for developing our ability to express and communicate on all levels – physically, emotionally, socially, mentally and behaviorally.

Topics include:

  • A deeper look at the role the Fear Paralysis plays in all the above aspects
  • Exploration of the role reflexes associated with the Moro – Palmar, Infant Plantar, Rooting, Suck, Babkin and Spinal Perez – play in helping to establish language abilities, and develop maturity, confidence and self-esteem.
  • Simple techniques and tools for enhancing the integration of these reflexes with both children and adults.
