Class Description

This 2-day course deals with how our reading and writing ability is affected by various factors such as our vision, our ability to recognise the sounds of the language and our motor ability. We learn how to check for non integrated primitive reflexes and recognize other motor disabilities that are important in reading difficulties and how to improve reading and writing ability by correcting these balances with rhythmic movemnts and reflex integration activities.

Ideal for OTs, OTAs, PTs, PTAs, SLPs, parents, social workers, family and mental health therapists, developmental optometrists and VTs, yoga therapists, classroom teachers; special education teachers; nursury and preschool teachers, health care providers; massage therapists, trauma specialists and caregivers; kinesiologists, Brain Gym instructors.

Topics Include

  • Demonstrate and practice how the 17 Rhythmic Movements can be combined to create more in-depth movements replicating how infant movements become more complex.
  • Identify how movement and sensory processing are linked together for development.
  • Demonstrate and practice how to add vision and auditory information when checking reflexes.
  • Demonstrate and practice how to add vision and sound to the 17 Rhythmic Movements
  • Explain the importance of infant movements for the myelination of the corpus callosum and the ability to develop specialization of the hemispheres
  • Explain the development of fine motor skills
  • Identify how movement and sensory processing are linked together for development.
  • Demonstrate how to add vision and auditory information when checking reflexes.

Class Objectives

Upon course completion students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate how the 17 Rhythmic Movements can be combined to create more in-depth movements replicating how infant movements become more complex.
  • Identify how movement and sensory processing are linked together for development.
  • Demonstrate how to add vision and auditory information when checking reflexes.
  • Demonstrate how to add vision and sound to the 17 Rhythmic Movements
  • Explain the importance of infant movements for the myelination of the corpus callosum and the ability to develop specialization of the hemispheres
  • Explain the development of fine motor skills
  • Review the Moro, Tonic Labyrinthine and Symmetrical Tonic Neck reflex. Provide additional information about these reflexes
  • Demonstrate the movement patterns and protocols for the Asymmetric Tonic Neck, Head Righting, Hand-Moth Babkin, Infant Grasp and Hands Pulling Reflexes.

  • The role infant movement and reflexes play in brain growth, learning, emotional development and behavior, and the research showing the crucial importance of integrating infant reflexes for foundational sensory processing and learning skills.
  • Why un-integrated reflexes are a major factor in challenges such as ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, developmental delay, sensory processing disorder, autism, chronic stress/overwhelm and other learning, emotional and behavioral difficulties.
  • How infant reflexes creates and strengthens neural networks for reading and writing.
  • How Rhythmic Movement Training integrated reflexes involved in developing reading, writing and academic skills

Assessments

Students taking the RMTi courses for professional credit or continuing education must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Attend the entire duration of the training
  2. Complete a written test of at least 75% correct answers demonstrating an understanding of the important concepts taught in the class.
  3. Actively participate in experiential learning and practicing of the movements.
  4. Show competency in lab work.
  5. Submit a completed training evaluation form.

Students are expected to read the course manual and to actively participate in class discussions.

  • Relationship of retained reflexes to reading and writing challenges
  • How to check for non-integrated primitive reflexes relating to reading and writing
  • How to improve reading and writing abilities with RMT movements, gentle isometric techniques and other movement related activities.
  • Further information and integrating techniques for the Moro, TLR and STNR reflexes
  • Development of Head Righting for postural stability leading to efficient learning ability
  • The importance of the Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) for later reading and writing skills
  • Auditory processing challenges and connection to reading problems
  • Hand Reflexes and fine motor development essential for writing skills
  • Eye & Ear Development & Challenges Neural Patterns for Reading
